ICE-Free Capital District, Utica IWW to Rally in Latham to Prevent Deportation – June 5!

by Utica IWW

There will be a rally held on Monday, June 5th at 9:30am in Latham, NY as activists accompany immigrant Ricky Morgan for his monthly immigration check-in with ICE.

Ricky Morgan lives and works in Utica and is facing a threat of deportation to Jamaica. He was targeted in the past by ICE during the Obama administration and was separated from his family by ICE for six months. Activists rallied to support Ricky and assisted his family over the years. For a while, he was only checking in with ICE once a year until he was told three months ago that he is now a priority for deportation and has to check in with ICE monthly.

Ricky is the father of three children, and three step-children, who are US citizens, and is also married to a US citizen. He is the primary caregiver for his youngest son and is a main pillar of support for another son who has down syndrome and is a leukemia survivor. Ricky lives and works in Utica, is a great cook, and an avid soccer player and coach. If he is separated from his family, it would spell disaster for them. We are not sure what will happen to Ricky but we are hoping for the best.

All over the nation, people are pushing for sanctuary, accompanying immigrants facing deportation and organizing for immigrant justice. Countless undocumented immigrants and other workers and students went on strike on May 1 to show how much this country relies on the labor of immigrants. Across upstate NY, immigrants and immigrant justice activists are active in this struggle. Activists with ICE-Free Capital District and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in Utica will be out in support of Ricky on June 5.

Please join us on Monday, June 5 at 9:30am, at the USCIS office, 1086 Troy-Schenectady Rd in Latham, NY (park down the street but not at the actual building) please come to rally for and accompany Ricky Morgan as he goes in for his next appointment with ICE. His appointment is at 10am. Please come with signs of support and solidarity for Ricky and immigrant justice.

For anyone heading in from Utica, please meet for a carpool that will leave at 8:00am sharp at Cornerstone Community Church, 500 Plant St.
