In response to recent votes and moratoriums by our elected officials, Congressman Richard Hanna and Utica Councilman Frank Vescera, as well as the support of initiatives to ban the flow of Syrian refugees by New York State Senator Joe Griffo:
The people are urged to come stand in solidarity with refugees, immigrants and migrants fleeing poverty and war, from Syria and around the world, and let them know that they are welcome in Utica. Politicians have spoken, now it’s time for the people to have their say!
Thursday, December 10th at 5 PM in Oneida Square, the people of Utica can send a direct message to our representatives that they disagree with the reactionary courses of action put forth by opportunism, bigotry and misleading points about the refugee crisis emanating from war-torn Syria.
Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather and to also bring candles or flashlights to shine as we stand in solidarity with the huddled masses yearning to breathe free.
Signs, banners and flags are also strongly encouraged.
We will stand in solidarity with, and in remembrance of the struggles faced by, those already in our community, as well as those who seek a safe place in this world to thrive. We will stand against Islamophobia and fear of outsiders. We will stand against the ravages of war and poverty that send so many from their homes. The “City That Loves Refugees” will stand for refugees.
